Under the partnership, Equinor and SINTEF will work on projects providing value creation and helping the former’s shift toward becoming a broad energy company.

Equinor research and technology senior vice-president Sophie Hildebrand said: “Equinor and SINTEF have a long history together, but we must continue to look ahead. With this agreement, we can quickly achieve results in areas that are important for the energy transition.”

Equinor has already constructed the world’s first floating wind farm, Hywind Scotland. The company has now started the process of building Hywind Tampen, Norway’s first floating wind farm.

In 2005, the first test of the Hywind technology was carried out in SINTEF’s Ocean Basin Laboratory.

The companies will now look at anchoring systems for the turbines, maintenance, control systems and grid connection and examine other concepts for floating wind.

In addition to offshore wind, Equinor and SINTEF are collaborating in other key areas including marine systems, energy systems and modelling studies.

SINTEF president and CEO Alexandra Bech Gjørv said: “This agreement is about more than just a collaboration within Norway’s borders. It is about strengthening our global position in areas where Norway has a strong natural and technological advantage.

“Norway is an energy and maritime nation and could become one of the biggest players within sustainable energy from the ocean.”
