German technology group Voith has secured a contract valued at around €40m to modernise parts of ENGIE’s 360MW Ffestiniog Power Station in Snowdonia, North Wales.

Under the deal, Voith will manufacture, install, and commission two units of the plant. The contract also includes an option for the refurbishment of two additional units.

Design, planning, and component production work is expected to begin immediately, while onsite construction is expected to start by the end of next year.

Modernisation work is scheduled to be completed by early 2020.

When completed, the mid-life-refurbishment will enable Ffestiniog to react more quickly to grid requirements and is expected to extend the design life of the plant by another 20 years.

The pumped-storage plant was commissioned in 1963. It is a part of the 2GW first hydro pumped storage operation and is capable of producing enough electricity to power North Wales for several hours.
