New 495MW combined-cycle power plant at Grand River Energy Centre in Oklahoma has become operational.

The plant is equipped with a Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) M501J gas turbine, which was built at the company’s Savannah Machinery Works in Georgia, US.

The turbine is paired in combined-cycle with a steam turbine that was built at the MHPS Nagasaki Works site in Japan.The unit also includes a generator from Mitsubishi Electric.

The power plant is currently undertaking tuning as it approaches final performance demonstrations, scheduled to be held this month. In addition, GRDA has signed a 25-year service agreement with MHPS as part of the project.

MHPS' Americas president and chief executive officer (CEO) Paul Browning said: “This is our 23rd J-Series gas turbine installed globally, and our first in the Americas.

“GRDA is now able to sell power to the grid ahead of schedule. Successful and smooth commissioning is critical for MHPS, because our team is preparing to commission eleven more J-Series turbines in North America during the next 12-24 months.”
