French independent power producer Total Eren has begun studies to develop a large-scale green hydrogen project near the borough of San Gregorio in Magallanes, Chile.

The H2 Magallanes project will have up to 10GW of installed wind capacity.

The project scope also includes a desalination plant, an ammonia (NH3) plant and up to 8GW of electrolysis capacity, as well as port facilities for delivering the green ammonia to domestic and overseas markets.

Total Eren purchased private lands in Magallanes with suitable onshore wind conditions and direct access to the sea for the project.

The company plans to launch the project in 2025, with the aim of producing hydrogen by 2027.

Last month, Total Eren signed a collaboration agreement with the University of Magallanes for the project.

Under the agreement, the two parties will elaborate the project’s stakeholder engagement plan, which will be in line with the best practice standards guide defined by the Chilean Ministry of Energy.

Total Eren Global executive vice-president and business development head Fabienne Demol said: “We are delighted to present this large-scale green hydrogen project, a pioneering initiative that we are proud to officially launch today in Chile’s Punta Arenas.

“We would like to thank the Ministries of Energy and Education of Chile, the University of Magallanes, our shareholder, TotalEnergies, for their continuous support and ambitious vision for the deployment of green hydrogen worldwide, as well as our teams in Chile and in France, which are key to this project’s development.”

The project will also support Chile’s ambition to be a world-leading company in the production of green hydrogen through electrolysis.

In January 2019, NBT and Total Eren signed a financial agreement worth €155m for the first phase of the 250MW Syvash wind farm in Kherson, Ukraine, which has since begun operations.
