Malaysia’s state-owned utility Sarawak Energy has signed an agreement with General Electric (GE) and Sinohydro to construct a 400MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) Block at Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu.

The contract was signed with a consortium of four companies, which include GE Power Solutions, GE, Sinohydro Corporation, and Sinohydro Corporation.

Sarawak Energy Group's chief executive officer Datuk Torstein Dale SjØtveit said: “The new and advanced technology will generate electricity at a higher efficiency and output, enabling us to meet growing demand of Sarawak’s organic load. We will ensure that the plant will be effectively and safely operated through the labelled transition system analyser (LTSA), which is crucial for the long-term operational maintenance of the plant.”

Construction of the MYR1bn ($237.8m) project is expected to begin this month and is expected to be completed by mid-2019.

GE will be the engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contractor with consortium partner Sinohydro, China’s leading power and infrastructure EPC contractor.

In addition, the proposed long-term service agreement (LTSA) was signed to provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services and support for the power plant over a period of eight years and as per requirements.

Sarawak Energy also has plans to develop a new 1,200MW gas-power plant at Samalaju Industrial Park in Malaysia following the completion of Bintulu project.
