Spain-based wind energy company Siemens Gamesa has secured a contract to supply its 5.X platform turbines for Iberdrola’s 94MW Iglesias wind farm in Burgos, Spain.

The project is set to be the first in the country to use the 5.X platform turbines, which are claimed to be among the most powerful for onshore projects.

One 5.X turbine can generate enough clean energy to power almost 5,000 Spanish households.

The turbines will also be the most powerful used at any Iberdrola wind farm in Spain.

Under the contract, Siemens Gamesa will supply 14 SG 6.6-170 (5.X platform) and two SG 5.0-145 (4.X platform) turbines. The company has also agreed to provide services for five years.

The first 14 turbines will operate at a nominal capacity of 6MW.

The Iglesias wind farm is scheduled to come online early next year and will have the capacity to power more than 75,000 households while offsetting 250,000t of carbon emissions a year.

Siemens Gamesa Onshore CEO Lars Bondo Krogsgaard said: “Siemens Gamesa has made many firsts in Spain working in partnership with Iberdrola.

“This first is also special as it marks a debut for the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform in the country, the most powerful turbine in the sector, and that can provide a real boost to the country’s energy transition.

“We look forward to turning this first wind project using the platform into a success and for many more firsts to come with Iberdrola.”

Nacelles for the wind turbines will be produced locally at Siemens Gamesa’s plant in Ágreda.

The project is also expected to benefit the company’s Spanish suppliers, who will be involved in producing several components, including wind turbine towers.

Last month, Siemens Gamesa received a ‘firm order’ to deliver its wind turbines to Ørsted’s Gode Wind III offshore wind farm in Germany.
