India’s state-owned company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commissioned a 700MW supercritical thermal unit at Bellary Thermal Power Project (TPP) in the Indian state of Karnataka.

BHEL was selected by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) for the thermal unit through a international competitive bidding on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.

The $833.8m contract for third thermal unit was awarded by KPCL in 2010.

TPP already runs two thermal units, which each have a capacity of 500MW. They were supplied and installed by BHEL.

BHEL has supplied and executed 3,210MW of sets in the state to date, which account for 94% of the coal-based installed capacity of KPCL.

The company is also carrying out a 1,600MW supercritical thermal power project at Yeramarus and the 370MW gas-based Yelahanka combined cycle power project (CCPP).

The Yeramarus TPP is being set-up by Raichur Power Corporation, a joint venture company between BHEL and KPCL, and is in an advanced stage of commissioning.

Said to KPCL’s first gas-based power plant, Yelahanka CCPP will be equipped with a fuel efficient advanced class gas turbine.

BHEL has also commissioned two 660MW units at Barh Super Thermal Power Station in Bihar, with one 660MW unit at both Bara and Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, and two 800MW boilers at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The company has already commissioned 6,716MW in the current financial year.
