Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian Group has secured 47 acres of land to develop a submarine power cable plant in Somerset, Massachusetts.
The company signed an agreement with Commercial Development Company (CDC) to acquire the land at the former Brayton Point coal power plant site.

Prysmian Group will invest around $200m to convert the now-defunct power plant into a clean energy hub.
Prysmian Group Projects Business executive vice president Hakan Ozmen said: “We are very pleased with the agreement reached with CDC and the progress of our project to build a new plant in Brayton Point.
“I would like to extend particular thanks to the Massachusetts state government for its attention to this important project, which will make it possible to convert the area home to the former Somerset coal plant to production in support of the energy transition in the USA.
“The new plant will allow us to provide even closer support to our customers and gain a strong competitive advantage in a market expected to undergo sharp growth, with the goal of 30GW of new capacity to be installed by 2030 under the Biden Plan.”

By GlobalDataThe facility will manufacture subsea cables to bring clean power from offshore wind assets to the electricity grid.
Its finalisation also involves awarding projects for cabling the Commonwealth Wind and Park Wind City offshore wind projects, which will be developed by Avangrid subsidiary Avangrid Renewables.
Avangrid chairman Ignacio Galán said: “Avangrid is proud to be a leader in the US offshore wind industry and deliver transformational investments that create quality jobs, support local economies and advance the development of a local supply chain for the growing US market.”
The deal’s completion is subject to securing state permits for the cable plant’s construction.
In December last year, Massachusetts selected Commonwealth Wind as part of the state’s third competitive procurement for offshore wind power.
