Australian renewable energy firm Windlab has proposed to build a 1.2GW wind and solar power project at north Queensland, in place of an existing proposal for a coal-fired energy facility at the same site.

The facility will be known as Kennedy Energy Park. It will be the ‘first-of-its-kind’ and will need support from the A$10bn ($7.5bn) Clean Energy Finance (CEFC).

According to Windlab CEO Roger Price, Kennedy Energy Park is expected to have a 600MW wind farm along with a 600MW solar PV farm.

Price was quoted by RenewEconomy as saying: "We believe we can deliver nearly baseload power for a price of around $100/MWh. You are not going to build a new coal-fired generator for that sort of price."

"The facility will be the ‘first-of-its-kind’ and will need support from the A$10bn ($7.5bn) Clean Energy Finance (CEFC)."

The firm intends to generate up to 100MW of wind and solar energy under the first phase of the proposed renewable project.

Generated power from the facility is expected to be more than enough for the entire region stretching from Julia Creek through to Charters Towers. It can even deliver the excess for Townsville and beyond.

The renewable project will, however, need a new transmission line for supplying power to the existing main grid in the country.
