Pilgrim nuclear restart

US-based power producer Entergy has restarted operations at the 680MW Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, Massachusetts after a $70m upgrade.

The nuclear power-generating facility has been returned to full service after the investment was used to renew, replace, overhaul and inspect equipment in order to ensure its safe operations.

As well as renewal of components, the 35-day planned shutdown of the plant also involved replacement of fuel for the reactor.

Pilgrim site vice-president John Dent said: "Our 2015 refuelling outage was a great success.

"Between months of planning and the careful execution of those plans made by our well-trained and professional employees, RFO-2015 will go down as one that not only resulted in a safer and more reliable plant, but demonstrated the ability of the whole Pilgrim team to do a great job."

About 1,184 extra contract workers had worked for the facility upgrade, along with 2000 employees.

Works at the facility involved replacement of a water heater, post-Fukushima upgrades, condenser boot seal replacements, maintenance and inspection of components for safe and reliable operations.

The nuclear power plant has the capacity to supply electricity to nearly 680,000 homes.

The plant operated at 97% capacity in 2014.
