US-based Invenergy Clean Power has started commercial operations at the 600MW natural gas-fired Nelson Energy Center in the state of Illinois.

Located in Lee County, approximately 120 miles to the west of Chicago, the power facility has been developed by Invenergy Development,which is a joint venture between an Invenergy affiliate and Stark Investments.

General Electric (GE) had supplied its 7FA gas turbines and steam turbines for the combined cycle power project. In addition, GE has also delivered two GE A10 steam turbines to the plant.

"The firm will be looking after the operation and maintenance of the facility through its affiliate Invenergy Services."

Portion of the power generated at the facility will be supplied to WPPI Energy, which is an energy firm offering its supplies to 51 locally owned power utilities.

The remaining energy output from the centre will be sold to the PJM wholesale electricity market.
