They will feature 111 wind turbines generating power for 300,000 homes – an expected annual production of 2TWh.

To be situated in the Lycksele, Vilhelmina and Storuman municipalities, the project forms a key part of Vattenfall’s strategy to provide fossil-free energy.

Detailed design and planning is the project’s next phase. An investment decision is due in 2025, with construction scheduled to commence in 2026.

Vattenfall land-based project development head Marie Kimming stated: “The fact that we now have the necessary permits for the Norrbäck and Pauträsk projects is welcome because the need for electricity, not least in northern Sweden, is expected to increase sharply.”

In early 2024, the Swedish utility commissioned the 168MW Vesterhav Syd offshore wind farm in Denmark, which now powers 170,000 households.

The installation of the wind farm’s 20 turbines was completed between July and September 2023, with the first power fed into the Danish grid in November.

In December 2023, Vattenfall agreed to sell the UK Norfolk offshore wind zone to RWE for an enterprise value of £963m (€1.12bn).

The transaction enables the continued development of three wind farms within the zone, each with a capacity of 1.4GW, meeting the energy needs of four million homes.
