Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has started construction on an ultra-supercritical-pressure boiler and flue gas desulfurisation (FGD) system for a 1GW expansion project at Cirebon coal-fired power plant, Indonesia.
Construction will be carried out by MHPS in consortium with Toshiba Group and Hyundai Engineering & Construction under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract signed in 2015.

As part of the agreement, MHPS will manufacture, supply, and procure equipment, as well as trial FGD operations.
The expansion is being built by PT Cirebon Energi Prasarana (CEPR), an entity collectively financed by Marubeni, JERA, PT Indika Energy Tbk, Samtan, and Korea Midland Power. The facility is expected to be commissioned by 2022.
Apart from adding 1GW of additional capacity, the new plant will help Indonesia meet its growing energy demand. It will supply power to state-owned electricity utility PT PLN (Persero) under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
It will also support the expansion of the Java-Bali power network, a major part of PLN’s national power supply equipment plan.
