The project and all its infrastructure will then be transferred to KETRACO.

This collaboration will significantly enhance Kenya’s national grid with an investment of $736m, strengthening the country’s power supply network.

Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi explained that the infrastructure project is designed to enhance the country’s national electricity infrastructure, while ensuring reliable access to power.

Wandayi stated: “This agreement marks the beginning of a transformative initiative to develop, finance, construct, operate and maintain key transmission lines and substations across Kenya. The move will support Kenya’s growing economy and development goals.”

The Kenyan government has given assurances that it will not bear financial burdens for the project’s execution.

The cost will be finalised through a competitive bidding process, which aims to focus on local content and create business opportunities for Kenyans.

In September 2024, Kenya Electricity Transmission formed a public-private partnership with Adani Group and Africa50, an infrastructure investment platform backed by the African Development Bank.

David Ndii, chief economic adviser to President William Ruto of Kenya, confirmed that the concession to construct power transmission lines has been awarded.

The partnership, worth $1.3bn, will strengthen the country’s power transmission infrastructure and distribution network.
