Independent energy expert and assurance provider DNV has been awarded a contract for design certification of Norway’s first bottom-fixed offshore wind farm, Sørlige Nordsjø II (SNII) by Ventyr.

The company will deliver design certification services for the SNII project’s wind turbines and offshore substation.

Spanning 520km² and located close to Denmark’s maritime border, SNII is 200km offshore the southwest of Norway.

According to DNV’s North Sea Outlook Report, this area could see more than 150GW of offshore wind capacity by the middle of the twenty-first century, making it a central hub for global offshore energy production.

Ventyr project director Wim Verrept stated: “Sørlige Nordsjø II marks a historic step forward for Norway’s offshore wind ambitions, and we are proud to partner with DNV to ensure the project meets the highest standards from the outset.

“Robust certification is essential to delivering safe and sustainable offshore wind infrastructure, and DNV’s experience and technical rigour make them a natural partner for this landmark development.”

The project is being developed by Ventyr, a consortium of JERA Nex, through its subsidiary Parkwind, and Ingka Investments, which is part of Ingka Group, IKEA’s largest retailer.

The SNII will feature between 60 and 100 turbines with a total capacity of 1.5GW.

SNII will be connected directly with Kvinesdal’s existing substation in southern Norway via a 200km high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link.

DNV renewables certification executive vice-president Kim Sandgaard-Mørk stated: “We are very pleased to deliver certification services for this project, which represents a key milestone in Norway’s offshore renewables ambition.

“DNV has been closely following the development of offshore wind in Norway and is actively supporting Norwegian authorities and regulators with technical insight and guidance based on decades of experience in certifying offshore wind projects globally.”

In June 2025, Worley Rosenberg was selected as the preferred contractor for the SNII project. The contractual scope includes design and engineering works.
