New South Wales (NSW) government’s Independent Planning Commission (IPC) has approved the development of Pottinger Energy Park, a renewable wind energy project in NSW’s South West Renewable Energy Zone (SW REZ) in Australia.

The energy park will be a joint venture between Someva Renewables and AGL Energy, generating up to 1.3GW of renewable energy.

The park will feature 247 wind turbines and a supporting battery system of 500MW/2000 megawatt hours (MWh) capacity. This development could supply the energy needs of 830,000 average NSW households annually.

Construction of the park will begin in late 2026, pending a final investment decision.

The initial phase will see the construction of up to 140 wind turbines and a 400MW/1,600MWh battery, which will connect to the Project EnergyConnect transmission network.

Someva Renewables managing director Jamie Chivers stated: “Pottinger Energy Park is a transformational project that will not only play an important role in NSW’s energy transition, but also provide a major boost to communities throughout the Riverina.”

Its approval follows the awarding of an 831MW access right by EnergyCo in the SW REZ in April 2025.

The project has been designed in close collaboration with the local community. It has gained backing from the Hay Shire Council and Edward River Council.

A comprehensive community benefits program,e has been established to deliver at least A$26m ($16.7m) in direct benefits to the community over 30 years, alongside indirect benefits such as host and neighbour payments and broader economic stimulus through job and business creation.

AGL power development general manager Travis Hughes stated: “Pottinger is one of the largest renewable energy projects in AGL’s development pipeline and planning approval is a crucial milestone as we progress our plans with our development partner, Someva, ahead of a potential final investment decision in 2026.”
