Vienna, September 3, 2025 — French renewable energy developer Hyvity has announced a strategic collaboration with Austrian hydropower optimization platform HYDROGRID to assess the feasibility and development of a 450 MW closed-loop pumped storage hydropower (PSH) facility in Chile.

As part of the early-stage development process, Hyvity is deploying HYDROGRID Insight, to evaluate a wide range of investment decision scenarios. The objective is to determine how the PSH asset can best integrate with surrounding renewable energy portfolios and maximize its contribution to regional energy value.

“HYDROGRID Insight adds an additional layer of data-backed intelligence that will enable us to better valorize our energy and avoid significant curtailment introduced by other renewables in the region,” Hyvity stated.

Addressing Chile’s Renewable Energy Challenges

Chile has experienced rapid growth in solar PV installations, resulting in pronounced day-night price disparities and frequent near-zero-price events during daylight hours. These dynamics place increasing pressure on the national grid and complicate operations for renewable energy producers.

Flexible storage solutions such as pumped hydro are expected to play a critical role in stabilizing the grid and ensuring energy is available when demand peaks. HYDROGRID Insight’s Investment Decision Simulation supports this effort by enabling developers to:

  • Align with regional energy needs: By modeling local production profiles and demand patterns, the PSH project can be optimized for system value. The simulation also assesses performance across various market products, including energy arbitrage and ancillary services.
  • Reduce risk and improve ROI: Early insights into curtailment risks and revenue potential help avoid costly misalignments and support more informed investment strategies.
  • Compare hardware configurations: Multiple turbine and pump setups can be modelled to identify the most efficient and cost-effective technical design for the site.

This partnership represents a significant step toward smarter, more resilient renewable energy infrastructure in Latin America.

Meet HYDROGRID and Hyvity at the IHA International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower in Paris

Hyvity and HYDROGRID will present their collaboration at the International Hydropower Association’s Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower, taking place this September in Paris. Attendees will gain insight into how advanced simulation tools are accelerating project development, refining hardware choices, and unlocking the full potential of renewable energy in Chile’s evolving market.
