Amazon has announced that nearly 1GW of clean, fossil-free energy is now being supplied to power grids across Europe, following the launch of 20 new renewable energy projects this year.

Supported by Amazon, these initiatives span five countries and were developed in partnership with 12 different energy developers, significantly expanding renewable energy capacity across the regions.

The new projects comprise 12 in Spain, three in Italy, three in Poland, one in Germany, and one in Greece.

Collectively, they have the capacity to power the equivalent of more than 700,000 European households each year.

Amazon now supports over 230 renewable energy projects in Europe, mainly through power purchase agreements (PPAs).

PPAs are seen as essential in providing developers with financial certainty, enabling them to invest in building new projects by securing a long-term buyer for the generated electricity.

The resulting projects supply additional renewable electricity to national grids, supporting the decarbonisation of energy mixes and benefiting households, businesses, and the public sector.

In Germany, Amazon invested in the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in 2022, committing to offtake 189MW of capacity.

Amazon supported its first renewable energy project in Poland in 2024 by backing the Miłkowice solar farm, with a commitment to offtake 87MW of capacity.

Additionally, in 2023, the company supported the Energías de Barranquilla and Valle del Sol Energías Renovables solar farms in Spain, committing to offtake a combined total of 64MW of capacity.

Apart from the 20 projects connected this year, Amazon has already enabled more than 40 operational renewable energy projects across Europe.

More than 70 additional Amazon-supported projects are expected to be completed and operational by 2030.

Amazon says it continues to seek opportunities to expand and advance the renewable energy sector in Europe, with a focus on countries where it operates such as the Republic of Ireland, Spain, and the UK, as well as in regions with carbon-intensive grids, including Poland and Germany.
