DoE announces $52.8m of advanced nuclear research funding

The funding will support advanced nuclear technology research, facility access and early career faculty programmes.

The US Department of Energy’s (DoE) Office of Nuclear Energy has selected 46 projects to receive a total of $52.8m in funding to progress advanced nuclear technology research and development.

The awards support nuclear technology development and early career faculty research activities, and are in line with President Trump’s Executive Order 14302, Reinvigorating the Nuclear Industrial Base.

The funding is divided into two focus areas that support early stage nuclear energy research efforts at US universities, national laboratories and industry across 19 states.

To support nuclear research and development, 43 projects will receive awards through both the Nuclear Energy University Programme for R&D and Integrated Research Projects and the Nuclear Science User Facilities Programme for facility access. The Distinguished Early Career Programme will invest in three outstanding early career university faculties developing innovative research and education programmes that advance new lines of inquiry and mission-critical research in nuclear energy.

Since 2009, the DoE’s Office of Nuclear Energy has disbursed more than $1bn in funding to advance nuclear energy research and support the education and training of future nuclear energy visionaries and leaders.

“Supporting these projects is an important investment in the nation’s nuclear technologies, universities and future workforce,” said Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Strategic Crosscuts Michelle Scott. “DoE is committed to helping supply researchers and educators with the resources and funding they need to keep driving innovative nuclear energy research and scientific breakthroughs.”
