BW ESS has purchased two stand-alone utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Spain with a combined capacity of 126MW/up to 675MW-hours.
The company acquired the projects from Spain-based renewable energy and storage developer Navacant.

The sites, both located in the Valencia region, have individual capacities of 99MW and 27MW.
Development of the two projects has been under way for approximately 18 months.
The projects are scheduled to reach ready-to-build status in 2027, with plans for commercial operation to commence in 2028.
The acquisition is part of BW ESS’ ongoing expansion in the Spanish energy storage market, where the company has been active since 2025.
BW ESS executive director Isaac García Moreno said: “We are targeting significant growth in our Spanish energy storage platform through a combination of greenfield development and acquisitions of high-quality projects at an advanced stage.
“This requires partnering with developers who understand local market dynamics and can execute efficiently.
“Navacant’s track record and the project fundamentals, including their large-scale and symmetric grid access rights, align with our strategy of building a diversified, high-performing storage portfolio.”
BW ESS stated its intention to own and operate the assets for the long term.
The company noted that Spain’s energy system requires infrastructure that can quickly adapt to fluctuations in supply and demand, aid in the integration of renewable energy sources and enhance system reliability.
As part of the agreement, CST Energy, a partner of Navacant, will continue to oversee the development phase of the projects up to the ready-to-build stage.
CST Energy will bring its experience with the local market and technical requirements. BW ESS will take charge of the assets once construction begins and will manage them through commercial operation.

As energy storage becomes increasingly important within Spain’s infrastructure landscape, the size and connection potential of the newly acquired projects align with BW ESS’ stated approach to generating value.
Last month, BW ESS completed the acquisition of the Yanco BESS, a 250MW/1GW-hour project in Riverina, New South Wales, Australia, from ACEnergy.
