Van Oord and Vestas have completed the installation of all 52 turbines at the 760MW Ecowende offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.

The final turbine was installed around 53km off the coast of IJmuiden in the Hollandse Kust (west) Lot VI zone.

The project now moves into its final construction phase, with full electricity generation targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

Ecowende is a joint venture (JV) between Shell, Eneco and Chubu.

Once fully operational, the wind farm is expected to generate 3.3TWh of renewable electricity each year.

The site is expected to provide electricity to about 3% of current Dutch demand.

The installation campaign commenced with the first turbine on 30 May 2026.

In July 2026, Ecowende was connected to TenneT’s offshore grid in the Netherlands and delivered its initial green electricity.

The wind farm is linked to the Dutch mainland via TenneT’s offshore high-voltage transmission system.

Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas supplied, installed, and commissioned all 52 V236-15MW turbines.

Van Oord was responsible for transportation using its Boreas installation vessel and handled the installation of the foundations and inter-array cables.

Van Oord project director Jan Willem Elleswijk said: “Our people have applied their expertise across every installation phase: the foundations, the inter-array cables, the scour protection and the transport of the turbines offshore.

“The successful deployment of our new offshore installation vessel Boreas shows what the vessel can achieve in this complex installation campaign.

“We achieved this result thanks to close collaboration with Ecowende, Vestas and all other partners involved. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, safely and professionally.”

The project has been guided by design measures from the outset, including an adaptive curtailment regime based on prevailing conditions.

It has also installed radar systems with AI-based detection to support monitoring and operational adjustments.
