Cable systems provider for energy and telecom sectors Prysmian Group has secured a contract worth nearly €200m from US-based offshore wind development company Vineyard Wind.

Prysmian will provide submarine power cable systems to deliver clean energy to the mainland power grid in the US.

Prysmian Group Projects executive vice-president Hakan Ozmen said: “This contract reinforces Prysmian Group’s leading position in the submarine cable market and underpins both our continued role and our commitment to the North American offshore wind sector.

The company is yet to receive the notice to proceed, which is expected at the end of this year.

Under the contract, Prysmian Group will be responsible for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of a high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable system composed of two 220kV three-core cables utilising extruded XLPE insulation.

The project will require a total of 134km of submarine power cables. Production work will be carried out at Prysmian Group’s centres of excellence in Pikkala, Finland and Arco Felice in Italy, while installation will be performed by Prysmian Group’s cable-laying vessels.

Additionally, Prysmian has agreed to provide its PRY-CAM, permanent monitoring solutions consisting of long-range distributed temperature sensing (DTS) and state-of-the-art real-time thermal rating (RTTR) systems.

Delivery and commissioning of the project are scheduled for 2021.
