Ignitis Gamyba deploys HYDROGRID Insight across Lithuania’s largest hydropower and pumped-storage portfolio
Vienna / Vilnius, 14. July 2026 Ignitis Gamyba AB, the power generation subsidiary of AB Ignitis Group – Lithuania’s state-controlled energy holding company – has selected HYDROGRID to deploy its hydropower optimization platform for its flagship assets: Kruonis Hydro Pumped Storage Power Plant (HPSPP) and Kaunas Hydropower Plant (HPP). Combined, the two plants represent over 1,000 MW of installed capacity and form the backbone of Lithuania’s grid balancing and reserve capability.
The agreement covers HYDROGRID Insight’s full module suite – encompassing real-time operational optimization, dispatch scheduling, market bidding support, and ancillary services management.
Kruonis HPSPP is Lithuania’s dominant grid-balancing asset, with 900 MW of installed capacity. A fifth unit is currently under construction to bring its total installed capacity to 1,010 MW. Kaunas HPP, with 100.8 MW across four run-of-river units, is Lithuania’s largest renewable electricity power plant. Kruonis big battery system with 80MW/160MWh will be installed next year at the location of Kruonis HPSPP and will be integrated to the common asset management.
“The power system dynamics we operate in are shifting – balancing requirements are tightening and the generation mix is changing fast. We needed better visibility and control over our assets to stay ahead of that, and that’s what HYDROGRID gives us: the operational intelligence and automation our grid role demands in constantly changing market conditions.”
– Giedrius Radvila, Head of Ancillary Services, Ignitis Gamyba AB
The deployment comes at a pivotal moment for the Baltic power system. On 8 February 2025, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania formally left the Soviet-era BRELL synchronized grid – linking Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – and joined the Synchronous Grid of Continental Europe. The transition, backed by more than €1.2 billion in EU investment under the Connecting Europe Facility, places Baltic generation operators under a new technical framework with higher expectations for frequency response and real-time operational precision. The newly created Baltic Balancing Capacity Market has created new opportunities to more efficiently utilize available hydro generation capacity and contribute to the efficiency of the market operation in the country and the entire Baltic region.
Ignitis Gamyba has been advancing digitalization across its generation fleet. The HYDROGRID deployment aligns with the company’s stated commitment to innovative, market-driven operational solutions.
“Synchronizing with Continental Europe rewrites the technical rulebook overnight: new frequency standards, new balancing obligations, new demands for real-time precision. HYDROGRID Insight gives operators the automation to meet those demands. We are proud to support Ignitis Gamyba in that mission.”
– Janice Goodenough, CEO, HYDROGRID
