The top five companies accounted for 24% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Bloom Energy filed the most hydrogen patents within the power industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 9 hydrogen-related patents in the quarter, compared with 3 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Vaillant with 8 hydrogen patent filings, Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute (6 filings), and Huaneng Clean Energy Research Institute (5 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 43% share of total patent filings

The largest share of hydrogen related patent filings in the power industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 43%, followed by China (26%) and Germany (4%). The share represented by the US was 24% higher than the 19% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
