The global power industry experienced a 57% decline in the number of robotics-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of robotics-related grants dropped by 48% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Robotics in Power – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.
Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the power industry was 246 in Q3 2022, versus 575 in the prior quarter.
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that ABB filed the most robotics patents within the power industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 29 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 15 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Southern Power Grid with 11 robotics patent filings, State Gridof China (9 filings), and Korea Electric Power (7 filings) in Q3 2022.
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the power industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 28%, followed by the US (21%) and South Korea (9%). The share represented by China was 31% lower than the 59% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
