Overall, Romania’s hydropower generation capacity declined by a CAGR of 0.14% from 2010 to 2021, to reach 6,508MW, and generation declined by a CAGR of 1.66% to reach 15,571GWh in 2021.

Installed capacity is forecast to increase by 1,288MW from 2022 to 2035, at which point hydropower is expected to account for 28% of total installed generation capacity. Large hydropower capacity declined from 5,997MW in 2010 to 5,736MW in 2021 at a CAGR of 0.4%. It is expected that large hydropower will reach 5,996MW by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 0.32% during 2021-2035. Pumped hydropower capacity was 230MW in 2021 and it is expected to reach 1,230MW by the end of 2035. Small hydropower capacity is expected to be 570MW by the end of 2035.
