US power industry sees a rise of 62.2% in deal activity in December 2020

The US power industry saw a rise of 62.2% in overall deal activity during December 2020, when compared with the last 12-month average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 73 deals worth $6.8bn were announced in December 2020, compared to the 12-month average of 45 deals.

M&A was the leading category in the month in terms of volume with 43 deals which accounted for 58.9% of all deals.

In second place was venture financing with 24 deals, followed by private equity with six transactions, respectively accounting for 32.9% and 8.2% of overall deal activity in the country’s power industry during the month.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the US power industry with total deals worth $5.3bn, while private equity and venture financing deals totalled $1.35bn and $152.88m, respectively.

US power industry deals in December 2020: Top deals

The top five power industry deals accounted for 76.4% of the overall value during December 2020.

The combined value of the top five power deals stood at $5.2bn, against the overall value of $6.8bn recorded for the month.

The top five power industry deals of December 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) The $1.35bn merger of Star Peak Energy Transition and Stem

2) The $1.2bn asset transaction with Terra-Gen by Ameren Missouri

3) Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec’s $1bn private equity deal with Invenergy Renewables

4) The $837m asset transaction with Western Generation Partners by ContourGlobal

5) Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners’ asset transaction with Exelon Generation Co for $810m.
