Asia-Pacific power industry contracts in January 2021: China leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, China led the activity in January 2021 with 24 contracts and a share of 30%, up 6.1% over the previous month and up 26% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Vietnam with 12 contracts and a share of 15% and India with ten contracts and a share of 12.5% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, China held the top spot with 19 contracts, followed by India with 16 and Australia with ten contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in January 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 36 contracts and a 46.2% share, followed by wind with 18 contracts and a 23.1% share and thermal with 15 contracts and a 19.2% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Asia-Pacific as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in January 2021, with 43 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (26) and Electricity Procurement (11).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 35 contracts and a 43.8% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 25 contracts and a 31.3% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: ten contracts and a 12.5% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: eight contracts and a 10% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and a 2.5% share.

Power contracts in January 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Gansu Province Electric Power Investment Group (China): 2,000MW from one contract
  2. Government of Nepal (Nepal): 679MW from one contract
  3. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 470MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in January 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China): 3,685MW from seven contracts
  2. China Gezhouba Group (China): 1,500MW from one contract
  3. Southwest Electric Power Design Institute (China): 1,320MW capacity from one contract.
