Atacama 2 Solar Thermal Plant – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System, Chile

By Carmen

The Atacama 2 Solar Thermal Plant – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System is an 110,000kW energy storage project located in Sierra Gorda, Antofagasta, Chile.

The thermal energy storage project uses molten salt as its storage technology. The project was announced in 2016 and will be commissioned in 2021.

The Atacama 2 Solar Thermal Plant – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System is being developed by Abengoa Solar. The project is owned by Abengoa Solar (100%), a subsidiary of Abengoa.

The key applications of the project are renewables capacity firming and renewables energy time shift.

Contractors involved

Abengoa Solar is the owner. Abengoa Solar is the developer.

Additional information

Atacama 2 will feature an 110 MW solar thermal electricity (STE) power plant with tower technology that will incorporate a thermal energy storage system able to generate electricity for 15 hours without direct solar radiation. It will also have a 100 MW photovoltaic plant. The design follows the Atacama 1 solar complex model currently under construction near Maria Elena, in the Antofagasta region of Northern Chile. Atacama 1 will incorporate the first solar thermal electricity power plant in Latin America, with 17.5 hours of thermal storage. The complex will also have a 100 MW PV plant.
