The Cochrane Thermal Power – Lithium Ion Battery Energy Storage System is a 20,000kW energy storage project located in Mejillones, Antofagasta, Chile.
The electro-chemical battery energy storage project uses lithium-ion as its storage technology. The project was announced in 2012 and was commissioned in 2016.
The Cochrane Thermal Power – Lithium Ion Battery Energy Storage System was developed by AES Energy Storage and AES Gener. The project is owned by Mitsubishi (40%) and AES Gener (60%), a subsidiary of The AES .
The key applications of the project are electric supply capacity and electric energy time shift.
The Cochrane thermo project calls for the construction and operation of a coal-fired thermoelectric plant in the bay of Mejillones. Developed by Empresa Eléctrica Cochrane, a 60-40 JV between INVERSIONES NUEVA VENTANAS (subsidiary of AES Gener), and Diamond Pacific Investment (subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp), the plant will feature two generation units, a substation and a 153km transmission line (220kV) that will inject power to the country’s northern Sing grid. The energy generated will be sold at a fixed price to mining companies including SQM and Sierra Gorda.
