The Cochrane thermo project calls for the construction and operation of a coal-fired thermoelectric plant in the bay of Mejillones. Developed by Empresa Eléctrica Cochrane, a 60-40 JV between Inversiones Nueva Ventanas (subsidiary of AES Gener), and Diamond Pacific Investment (subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp), the plant will feature two generation units, a substation and a 153km transmission line (220kV) that will inject power to the country’s northern SING grid. The energy generated will be sold at a fixed price to mining companies including SQM and Sierra Gorda.
