Electricity procurement contracts down 17% in January 2021

Electricity procurement contracts in January 2021 saw 53 contracts announced, marking a drop of 17% over the last 12-month average of 64, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 51 contracts and a 96.2% share
  2. Project Implementation: one contract and a 1.9% share
  3. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.9% share.

North America leads electricity procurement activity in January 2021

Comparing contracts activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 24 contracts and a share of 45.3% during January 2021, followed by Europe with 14 contracts and a 26.4% share and Asia-Pacific with 11 contracts and a 20.8% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement contracts in January 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 30 contracts with a 51.7% share, followed by wind with 20 contracts and a 34.5% share and thermal with five contracts and an 8.6% share.

Electricity procurement contracts in January 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (United States): 2,490MW from one contract
  2. Verizon Communications (United States): 692.5MW from four contracts
  3. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 470MW capacity from one contract.

Electricity procurement contracts in January 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Equinor Wind US L (United States): 2,490MW from one contract
  2. Invenergy L (United States): 525MW from two contracts
  3. Aksa Enerji Uretim (Turkey): 520MW capacity from two contracts.
