Electricity procurement contracts down 10% in Q2 2021

Electricity procurement contracts in Q2 2021 saw 249 contracts announced, marking a drop of 10% over the last four-quarter average of 276, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 217 contracts and an 87.1% share
  2. Electricity Supply: 17 contracts and a 6.8% share
  3. Project Implementation: 15 contracts and a 6% share.

North America leads electricity procurement activity in Q2 2021

Comparing contracts activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 89 contracts and a share of 35.7% during Q2 2021, followed by Europe with 81 contracts and a 32.5% share and Asia-Pacific with 48 contracts and a 19.3% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement contracts in Q2 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 172 contracts with a 64.7% share, followed by wind with 78 contracts and a 29.3% share and hydro with ten contracts and a 3.8% share.

Electricity procurement contracts in Q2 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Urzad Regulacji Energetyki (Poland): 5,530MW from four contracts
  2. Saudi Power Procurement (Saudi Arabia): 2,970MW from seven contracts
  3. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 1,840MW capacity from four contracts.

Electricity procurement contracts in Q2 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Orsted (Denmark): 2,633MW from two contracts
  2. EW Baltica two sp z oo (Poland) and EW Baltica three (Poland): 2,543MW from one contract
  3. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 2,500MW capacity from four contracts.
