Electricity procurement contracts down 5% in Q4 2020

Electricity procurement contracts in Q4 2020 saw 184 contracts announced, marking a drop of 5% over the last four-quarter average of 194, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 166 contracts and a 90.2% share
  2. Electricity Supply: 18 contracts and a 9.8% share.

North America leads electricity procurement activity in Q4 2020

Comparing contracts activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 74 contracts and a share of 40.2% during Q4 2020, followed by Europe with 49 contracts and a 26.6% share and Asia-Pacific with 37 contracts and a 20.1% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement contracts in Q4 2020

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 131 contracts with a 64.5% share, followed by wind with 52 contracts and a 25.6% share and hydro with 13 contracts and a 6.4% share.

Electricity procurement contracts in Q4 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution (India): 3,085MW from one contract
  2. Amazon Web Services (United States): 1,945MW from seven contracts
  3. Orsted (Denmark): 1,285MW capacity from two contracts.

Electricity procurement contracts in Q4 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Adani Power Maharashtra (India): 3,085MW from one contract
  2. Doggerbank Offshore Wind Farm Project one Projco (United Kingdom) and Doggerbank Offshore Wind Farm Project two Projco (United Kingdom): 1,920MW from three contracts
  3. Canadian Solar (Canada): 881MW capacity from three contracts.
