Electricity procurement tenders up 22% in Q2 2021

Electricity procurement tenders in Q2 2021 saw 50 tenders announced, marking a rise of 22% over the last four-quarter average of 41, according to GlobalData’s power industry tenders database.

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 30 tenders and a 60% share
  2. Electricity Supply: 17 tenders and a 34% share
  3. Project Implementation: three tenders and a 6% share.

North America leads electricity procurement activity in Q2 2021

Comparing tenders activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 23 tenders and a share of 46% during Q2 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with 13 tenders and a 26% share and Europe with nine tenders and an 18% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement tenders in Q2 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 30 tenders with a 46.9% share, followed by wind with 15 tenders and a 23.4% share and biopower with nine tenders and a 14.1% share.

Electricity procurement tenders in Q2 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of electricity procurement tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) (United States): 3,300MW from two tenders
  2. Korea Energy Agency (South Korea): 2,050MW from one tender
  3. Fitchburg Gas and Electric Light (United States), Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (United States), Massachusetts Electric (United States), Nantucket Electric (United States) and NSTAR Electric (United States): 1,600MW capacity from one tender.
