Electricity procurement tenders down 39% in Q3 2019

Electricity procurement tenders in Q3 2019 saw 48 tenders announced, marking a drop of 39% over the last four-quarter average of 79, according to GlobalData’s power industry tenders database.

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Electricity Supply: 24 tenders and a 50% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 21 tenders and a 43.8% share
  3. Project Implementation: two tenders and a 4.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: one tender and a 2.1% share.

Asia-Pacific leads electricity procurement activity in Q3 2019

Comparing tenders activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 17 tenders and a share of 35.4% during Q3 2019, followed by North America with 14 tenders and a 29.2% share and Europe with 12 tenders and a 25% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement tenders in Q3 2019

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 22 tenders with a 39.3% share, followed by wind with 17 tenders and a 30.4% share and biopower with eight tenders and a 14.3% share.

Electricity procurement tenders in Q3 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of electricity procurement tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (United States): 4,000MW from two tenders
  2. Manila Electric (Philippines): 2,900MW from three tenders
  3. Baltimore Gas and Electric (United States): 1,729MW capacity from one tender.
