Energy storage tenders down 19% in Q1 2020

Energy storage tenders in Q1 2020 saw 56 tenders announced, marking a drop of 19% over the last four-quarter average of 69, according to GlobalData’s power industry tenders database.

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 37 tenders and a 66.1% share
  2. Project Implementation: 15 tenders and a 26.8% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: two tenders and a 3.6% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: two tenders and a 3.6% share.

North America leads energy storage activity in Q1 2020

Comparing tenders activity in energy storage segment in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 44 tenders and a share of 78.6% during Q1 2020, followed by Asia-Pacific with seven tenders and a 12.5% share and Middle East and Africa with four tenders and a 7.1% share.

Solar is leading technology for energy storage tenders in Q1 2020

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 18 tenders with a 66.7% share, followed by hydro with three tenders and an 11.1% share and wind with two tenders and a 7.4% share.

Energy storage tenders in Q1 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of energy storage tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. CPS Energy (United States): 1,450MW from one tender
  2. Israel’s Ministry of Energy: 300MW from one tender
  3. Appalachian Power (United States) and Tennessee Valley Authority (United States): 200MW capacity from one tender.
