Energy storage tenders up 13% in Q3 2020

Energy storage tenders in Q3 2020 saw 70 tenders announced, marking a rise of 13% over the last four-quarter average of 62, according to GlobalData’s power industry tenders database.

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 28 tenders and a 40% share
  2. Project Implementation: 25 tenders and a 35.7% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: eight tenders and an 11.4% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: seven tenders and a 10% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two tenders and a 2.9% share.

North America leads energy storage activity in Q3 2020

Comparing tenders activity in energy storage segment in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 35 tenders and a share of 50% during Q3 2020, followed by Middle East and Africa with 13 tenders and an 18.6% share and Asia-Pacific with 12 tenders and a 17.1% share.

Solar is leading technology for energy storage tenders in Q3 2020

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 32 tenders with a 62.7% share, followed by wind with nine tenders and a 17.6% share and thermal with five tenders and a 9.8% share.

Energy storage tenders in Q3 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of energy storage tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. National Energy Regulator of South Africa (South Africa): 12,000MW from one tender
  2. NSW Coalition State Government: 8,000MW from one tender
  3. PacifiCorp (United States): 4,300MW capacity from one tender.
