Global power industry contracts in Q1 2022: Hydro technology down 57%

Hydro technology contracts activity in Q1 2022 saw 27 contracts announced, marking a drop of 57% over the last four-quarter average of 63, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, hydro held the fourth position in terms of number of contracts during Q1 2022 with a 4.2% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Hydro technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: nine contracts and a 33.3% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: eight contracts and a 29.6% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: four contracts and a 14.8% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 14.8% share
  5. Project Implementation: two contracts and a 7.4% share.

Asia-Pacific leads hydro contracts activity in Q1 2022

Comparing contracts activity in hydro technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 12 contracts and a share of 44.4% during Q1 2022, followed by Europe with eight contracts and a 29.6% share and North America with four contracts and a 14.8% share.

In fourth place was South and Central America with two contracts and a 7.4% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with one contract and a 3.7% share.

Hydro technology contracts in Q1 2022: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Hydro technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Hubei Qichun Garden Pumped Storage Power Station: 1,200MW from one contract
  2. Hydro-Quebec (Canada): 263MW from one contract
  3. Yukon Energy (Canada): 10MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Brookfield Renewable (United States): 263MW from one contract
  2. Tlingit Homeland Energy (Canada): 10MW from one contract.
