Global power industry contracts in Q3 2021: Biopower technology down 23%

Biopower technology contracts activity in Q3 2021 saw 20 contracts announced, marking a drop of 23% over the last four-quarter average of 26, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, biopower held the sixth position in terms of number of contracts during Q3 2021 with a 2.3% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Biopower technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: eight contracts and a 40% share
  2. Supply & Erection: eight contracts and a 40% share
  3. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 10% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: two contracts and a 10% share.

Asia-Pacific leads biopower contracts activity in Q3 2021

Comparing contracts activity in biopower technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 12 contracts and a share of 60% during Q3 2021, followed by Europe with four contracts and a 20% share and South and Central America with three contracts and a 15% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with one contract and a 5% share.

Biopower technology contracts in Q3 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Biopower technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Axpo Holding (Switzerland) and Niigata East Port Biomass Power Godo Kaisha: 50MW from one contract
  2. Karatsu Biomass Energy G.K: 49.9MW from one contract
  3. enfinium Skelton Grange: 49MW capacity from one contract.

Biopower technology contracts in Q3 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Toyo Engineering (Japan): 99.9MW from two contracts
  2. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners KS (Denmark) and SSE Slough Multifuel (United Kingdom): 50MW from one contract
  3. Nippon Steel Engineering (Japan): 49.9MW capacity from one contract.
