Global power industry contracts in Q3 2021: Hydro technology down 23%

Hydro technology contracts activity in Q3 2021 saw 57 contracts announced, marking a drop of 23% over the last four-quarter average of 74, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, hydro held the fourth position in terms of number of contracts during Q3 2021 with a 6.5% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Hydro technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 15 contracts and a 26.3% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 14 contracts and a 24.6% share
  3. Supply & Erection: 12 contracts and a 21.1% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: eight contracts and a 14% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: six contracts and a 10.5% share
  6. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 3.5% share.

Europe leads hydro contracts activity in Q3 2021

Comparing contracts activity in hydro technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 22 contracts and a share of 38.6% during Q3 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with 18 contracts and a 31.6% share and South and Central America with eight contracts and a 14% share.

In fourth place was North America with five contracts and an 8.8% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with four contracts and a 7% share.

Hydro technology contracts in Q3 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Hydro technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. State Grid Corporation of China (China): 1,200MW from one contract
  2. Korporata Elektroenergjitike Shqiptare (Albania) and SJVN (India): 210MW from one contract
  3. Nordural Grundartangi ehf: 182MW capacity from one contract.

Hydro technology contracts in Q3 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Sinohydro Bureau 12 (China): 1,200MW from one contract
  2. Bechtel (United States), HES Infra (India) and Patel Engineering (India): 210MW from one contract
  3. Landsvirkjun hf (Iceland): 182MW capacity from one contract.
