Global power industry contracts in September 2021: Thermal technology down 26%

Thermal technology contracts activity in September 2021 saw 26 contracts announced, marking a drop of 26% over the last 12-month average of 35, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the month, accounting for 23 contracts and an 85.2% share, followed by Coal with three contracts and an 11.1% share. Oil stood in third place with one contract and a 3.7% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during September 2021 with an 8.9% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 11 contracts and a 42.3% share
  2. Project Implementation: six contracts and a 23.1% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: three contracts and an 11.5% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and an 11.5% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: three contracts and an 11.5% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in September 2021

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with nine contracts and a share of 34.6% during September 2021, followed by Europe with six contracts and a 23.1% share and North America with five contracts and a 19.2% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with four contracts and a 15.4% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with two contracts and a 7.7% share.

Thermal technology contracts in September 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Sun Ba Power (Taiwan): 1,100MW from one contract
  2. WattBridge Energy (United States): 288MW from one contract
  3. Government Of Gabon (Gabon) and Societe d’Electricite et d’Eau du Gabon (Gabon): 120MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. CTCI (Taiwan) and Siemens Energy (Germany): 1,100MW from one contract
  2. PowerChina Hubei Engineering (China): 1,000MW from one contract
  3. ProEnergy Services (United States): 288MW capacity from one contract.
