Kainji is a 760MW hydro power project. It is located on Niger river/basin in Niger, Nigeria. The project is currently active. It has been developed in multiple phases. The project construction commenced in 1964 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1968.

Description

The project is developed and owned by Mainstream Energy Solutions.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 15,000 million cubic meter. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 12 in number. The penstock diameter is 8.55m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1964 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1968.

Contractors Involved

Kainji (Phase-1-Kainji Unit no. 9,10) is equipped with The English Electric kaplan turbines. The phase consists of 2 turbines with 80MW nameplate capacity.

Kainji (Phase-2-Kainji Unit no. 12) is equipped with Andritz Hydro kaplan turbine. The phase consists of 1 turbine with 100MW nameplate capacity.

Kainji (Phase-3-Kainji Unit no. 3,5,6) is equipped with Andritz Hydro propeller turbines. The phase consists of 2 turbines with 120MW nameplate capacity.

Kainji (Phase-4-Kainji Unit no. 11) is equipped with Andritz Hydro kaplan turbine. The phase consists of 1 turbine with 100MW nameplate capacity.

Kainji (Phase-5-Kainji Unit no. 7,8) is equipped with GE Renewable Energy kaplan turbines. The phase consists of 2 turbines with 80MW nameplate capacity.

GE Renewable Energy supplied 2 electric generators for the Kainji (Phase-1-Kainji Unit no. 9,10). The generator capacity is 85 MVA.

GE Renewable Energy supplied 2 electric generators for the Kainji (Phase-5-Kainji Unit no. 7,8). The generator capacity is 85 MVA.
