Description
The project is currently owned by Mercury NZ.
The net head of the project is 30m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 3 in number. The penstock diameter is 6.4m. Karapiro underwent through rehabilitation & modernization during 2021-2024. The project generated 490 GWh of electricity.

Contractors Involved
Andritz Hydro was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 3 units of kaplan turbines, each with 36MW nameplate capacity.
