Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in February 2020: The United Arab Emirates leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the United Arab Emirates led the activity in February 2020 with five contracts and a share of 25%, up 13.9% over the previous month and up 150% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Nigeria with three contracts and a share of 15% and Saudi Arabia with two contracts and a share of 10% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, Egypt held the top spot with two contracts, followed by Iran (Islamic Republic of Iran) with two and the United Arab Emirates with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in February 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with six contracts and a 37.5% share, followed by thermal with six contracts and a 37.5% share and wind with two contracts and a 12.5% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in February 2020, with 11 contracts, followed by T&D Project (5) and Electricity Procurement (4).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 14 contracts and a 70% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: three contracts and a 15% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 10% share
  4. Supply & Erection: one contract and a 5% share.

Power contracts in February 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Emirates Water and Electricity (United Arab Emirates): 7,200MW from three contracts
  2. Africa Finance (Nigeria), Climate Investor One (Netherlands), Electricite de Djibouti (Djibouti), Great Horn Investment Holding (Djibouti) and The Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) (Netherlands): 59MW from one contract
  3. Ethiopian Electric Power (Ethiopia): 5MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in February 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Marubeni (Japan): 4,800MW from two contracts
  2. Samsung C&T (South Korea): 2,400MW from one contract
  3. China Gezhouba Group International Engineering (China): 500MW capacity from one contract.
