Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in January 2020: Iran (Islamic Republic of Iran) leads activity
Looking at contracts by country, Iran (Islamic Republic of Iran) led the activity in January 2020 with five contracts and a share of 18.5%, down 1.5% over the previous month and up 150% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by the United Arab Emirates with three contracts and a share of 11.1% and Egypt with two contracts and a share of 7.4% during the month.
Looking at the last 12-month average, Egypt held the top spot with two contracts, followed by Iran (Islamic Republic of Iran) with two and the United Arab Emirates with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in January 2020
Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 13 contracts and a 59.1% share, followed by thermal with four contracts and an 18.2% share and hydro with three contracts and a 13.6% share.
Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in January 2020, with 13 contracts, followed by T&D Project (7) and Electricity Procurement (5).
The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:
- Consulting & Similar Services: nine contracts and a 33.3% share
- Project Implementation: eight contracts and a 29.6% share
- Power Purchase Agreement: five contracts and an 18.5% share
- Supply & Erection: three contracts and an 11.1% share
- Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and a 7.4% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:
- Hyunson Engineering & Construction: 1,300MW from one contract
- Qatar General Electricity and Water (Qatar): 800MW from one contract
- Peacock Investment: 500MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:
- Posco International (South Korea), Hyundai Engineering & Construction (South Korea) and Hyundai Engineering (South Korea): 1,300MW from one contract
- Marubeni (Japan), Qatar Electricity & Water Co QPSC (Qatar), Qatar Petroleum (Qatar) and Total Solar International (France): 800MW from one contract
- China Gezhouba Group (China): 500MW capacity from one contract.
