Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in January 2021: Saudi Arabia leads activity
Looking at contracts by country, Saudi Arabia led the activity in January 2021 with 11 contracts and a share of 47.8%, up 32.6% over the previous month and up 175% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Senegal with two contracts and a share of 8.7% and Guinea with two contracts and a share of 8.7% during the month.
Looking at the last 12-month average, Saudi Arabia held the top spot with four contracts, followed by Egypt with two and Iran with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in January 2021
Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with three contracts and a 37.5% share, followed by thermal with three contracts and a 37.5% share and wind with one contract and a 12.5% share.
Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Project was the most popular segment in January 2021, with 12 contracts, followed by Power Plant (5) and Smart Grid (4).
The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:
- Project Implementation: 16 contracts and a 69.6% share
- Supply & Erection: six contracts and a 26.1% share
- Power Purchase Agreement: one contract and a 4.3% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:
- Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates), EDF Renouvelables (France) and Nesma Holding: 300MW from one contract
- Bee’ah (United Arab Emirates): 120MW from one contract
- Ethiopian Electric Power (Ethiopia): 100MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:
- Larsen & Toubro (India): 300MW from one contract
- Emirates Waste to Energy (United Arab Emirates): 120MW from one contract
- Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (Spain): 100MW capacity from one contract.
