Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in March 2021: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in March 2021 with 112 tenders and a share of 51.9%, up 2.7% over the previous month and up 300% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Iraq with 13 tenders and a share of 6% and Kenya with 12 tenders and a share of 5.6% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, South Africa held the top spot with 28 tenders, followed by Kenya with six and Oman with four tenders.

Solar is top technology area for tenders in March 2021

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 29 tenders and a 59.2% share, followed by thermal with ten tenders and a 20.4% share and hydro with seven tenders and a 14.3% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in March 2021, with 141 tenders, followed by T&D Project (30) and Power Plant (27).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 152 tenders and a 70.4% share
  2. Project Implementation: 40 tenders and an 18.5% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 17 tenders and a 7.9% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: six tenders and a 2.8% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: one tender and a 0.5% share.

Power tenders in March 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (South Africa): 2,600MW from one tender
  2. Kenya Tea Development Agency (Kenya): 1MW from one tender
  3. Germany Trade And Invest (Germany): 0.22MW capacity from one tender.
