Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in Q1 2021: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in Q1 2021 with 246 tenders and a share of 45.2%, up 14.3% over the previous quarter and up 364% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Kenya with 37 tenders and a share of 6.8% and Oman with 22 tenders and a share of 4% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, South Africa held the top spot with 53 tenders, followed by Kenya with 13 and Oman with nine tenders.

Solar is top technology area for tenders in Q1 2021

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 104 tenders and a 57.5% share, followed by thermal with 52 tenders and a 28.7% share and hydro with 12 tenders and a 6.6% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in Middle East and Africa power tenders activity during Q1 2021, with 282 tenders, followed by Power Plant (97) and T&D Project (88).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 323 tenders and a 59.4% share
  2. Project Implementation: 132 tenders and a 24.3% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 60 tenders and an 11% share

The top issuers of tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:
