Middle East and Africa power plant contracts activity up 180% in October 2021

There were 28 power plant contracts announced in the Middle East and Africa region in October 2021, marking a rise of 180% over the last 12-month average of 10, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Power Plant stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the Middle East and Africa region in October 2021 with 28 contracts and a 53.8% share, followed by T&D Project with six contracts and an 11.5% share and Electricity Procurement with six contracts and an 11.5% share during the month.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 27 contracts and a 96.4% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: one contract and a 3.6% share.

Solar is top technology for Middle East and Africa power plant contracts in October 2021

Looking at power plant contracts by the type of technology in the Middle East and Africa region, solar accounted for 13 contracts with a 46.4% share, followed by wind with 13 contracts and a 46.4% share and thermal with two contracts and a 7.1% share.

Middle East and Africa power plant contracts in October 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Department of Energy, South Africa (South Africa): 2,331MW from 19 contracts
  2. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq) and National Investment Commission, Iraq: 1,000MW from one contract
  3. Egyptian Electricity Transmission (Egypt): 500MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. H1 Holdings (South Africa): 1,911MW from 16 contracts
  2. Mainstream Renewable Power South Africa (South Africa) and Globeleq Africa (United Kingdom): 1,274MW from 12 contracts
  3. Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.
