Mkuranga Substation is a 400kV substation located in Mkuranga, Pwani, Tanzania.
The Mkuranga Substation project’s construction is expected to begin in 2024. The works are expected to be commissioned in 2025.
Mkuranga Substation project, which is a new substation, will be operated by Tanzania Electric Supply.
The designed voltage level of the substation is 400/220kV and the operating voltage level is 400/220kV.
The step-in voltage of the project is 400kV and the step-out voltage is 220kV. Upon completion, the substation will have a capacity of 1000MVA.
Mkuranga Substation project development status
The project is expected to be commissioned in 2025. Approximately $42.58m was financed by the authorities to undertake the construction works of the project.

Tanzania Electric Supply Co Ltd (TANESCO), formerly Tanganyika Electric Supply Co Ltd, is a government owned integrated power company. The company’s operations are regulated by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. It generates, transmits, distributes and supplies electricity. TANESCO generates the power through hydro and thermal power stations. TANESCO also procures electricity from independent power producers and EPPs. Its transmission system consists of 50 substations interconnected by transmission lines, and the distribution system distributes electricity and provides customer service.
